Types of short-term accommodation in Chongqing

Luxury and "high-altitude" hotels

Chongqing is famous for hotels perched on the upper floors (50–70) of skyscrapers, offering cyberpunk-style city views.

  • Top-end luxury: Niccolo (尼依格罗), Regent (丽晶) and JW Marriott Chongqing (重庆万豪) represent the highest tier.
  • Upper luxury: Westin (威斯汀), Sheraton (喜来登) and InterContinental Raffles City (来福士洲际) deliver premium facilities.
💡 Local tip: choose hotels near Jiefangbei (解放碑) or Nanbin Road (南滨路) for the most iconic skyline views.

Serviced apartments

For expats and business travellers staying more than a few days, serviced apartments offer kitchenettes and laundry facilities.

  • Top picks: Somerset Jiefangbei (解放碑盛捷) and Ascott Raffles City (来福士雅诗阁) welcome international travellers with full licences and on-site services.
  • Why they work: these properties hold full licences to host foreign guests and handle all police registration automatically.

Mid-range and budget hotels

Domestic brands dominate this segment, and quality has improved significantly.

  • Mid-range: Atour (亚朵), Mercure (美居) and SSAW Boutique (君亭) balance design with comfort.
  • Budget / economy: Hanting (汉庭), Jinjiang Inn (锦江之星) and Home Inn (如家) are reliable chains. Hanting and Atour are currently traveller favourites for consistency.

The "homestay" market

⚠️ Airbnb withdrew from mainland China in July 2022. You cannot use it for domestic bookings. For homestays you must use Chinese platforms such as Tujia (途家) or Meituan (美团) — and note that many private homestays inside residential compounds are not licensed to host foreign guests.

The "foreigner-friendly" rule

Not every hotel in China is legally permitted to host non-mainland citizens. Book a cheap hotel on a local app without checking, and you may be turned away at reception late at night.

  1. Use Trip.com. This is the international version of Ctrip (携程). It automatically filters or clearly labels hotels licensed to host foreign guests.
  2. Verify "foreigner-friendly" status. If you book on a local Chinese app such as Meituan, you must message the host specifically to ask whether they accept foreign passports.

Police registration (mandatory)

📌 Core rule: under Chinese law, all foreigners must register their accommodation with public security (PSB) within 24 hours of arrival.
  • Hotels and serviced apartments: reception scans your passport and processes registration digitally. You do nothing.
  • Private rentals / homestays: you must register yourself. In 2026 many parts of Chongqing allow online registration via the 重庆公安 WeChat mini-program — scan the landlord's QR code, upload your passport identity page and your entry visa / stamp page. If the digital system fails or is unavailable in your district, go with your landlord to the local police station (派出所).

Step-by-step: booking your first stay

  1. Install the right app before arrival. Download Trip.com — it is the most reliable tool for English-speaking users seeking compliant accommodation.
  2. Check the terrain. Do not trust flat-map "walking distance": a hotel 200 m from a metro station may sit fifteen floors above it. Look for hotels near Metro Line 1 or Line 2 to stay connected to the main arteries.
  3. Filter for the licence. Make sure your booking explicitly states that international guests are accepted.
  4. Save the Chinese address. Taxi drivers will not understand an English address — keep the hotel's Chinese name and address ready on your phone in large type.

Common mistakes

  • Relying on Airbnb. Open the app and you will find no mainland China inventory. Switch to Trip.com, Tujia or Meituan.
  • Underestimating the "8D" geography. Booking because a hotel looks "central" on the map can leave you at the bottom of a cliff with the metro station at the top. Check proximity to a specific metro exit.
  • Missing the registration deadline. If you stay in a private apartment and do not register within 24 hours, you may face fines or warnings when you eventually exit the country or renew a visa.
  • Arriving without WeChat installed and set up. You need it for the PSB mini-program and for many hotel services.
  • Expecting to pay by card at budget hotels. Many mid-range and economy properties accept only WeChat Pay or Alipay. Set up your e-wallet before check-in.

FAQ

Is Jiefangbei better than Nanbin Road for visitors? Jiefangbei is the commercial heart (Yuzhong) and more walkable for food streets and Metro Lines 1 and 2. Nanbin Road sits across the river in Nan'an — better skyline views, slightly weaker for public transport convenience.

How does a foreigner register an address if not staying in a hotel? As of 2026, try the 重庆公安 WeChat mini-program first. If the interface is Chinese-only or cannot verify your data, go with your landlord and passport to the nearest police station.

Is there an English tourist hotline in Chongqing? The government services hotline 12345 handles tourist enquiries, and English operators may be available on request.

Can I pay with a foreign credit card? Top-end luxury and upper-luxury hotels generally accept Visa / Mastercard. Mid-range and economy hotels usually require WeChat Pay or Alipay — set these up before you travel.

How far ahead should I book? Supply is ample year-round, but book at least a few weeks ahead to lock in the best rates — especially around major Chinese holidays such as Spring Festival or the National Day golden week.
