Why this page exists. Most of our guides are how-to documents. This one is a trend read. In early September 2026 Shenzhen's port authority published a set of record inbound-travel figures, and the standout signal was the pace of foreign arrivals. We distilled the public numbers into the parts that matter to someone deciding where to live in China — visa rules, where the foreign community clusters, and the on-the-ground services that make arriving easier. All figures reflect publicly reported data as of 5 Sep 2026.
The headline: foreigners are the fastest-growing arrival
Shenzhen's ports are already China's busiest. By 5 Sep 2026 they had cleared over 2 billion inbound/outbound travellers — 28 days earlier than the same milestone in 2025, at a daily average of 825,000 (up 13.5% year on year). But the more interesting line is who is arriving:
- Foreign nationals through Shenzhen ports passed 5 million by 4 Aug 2026 — 58 days earlier than in 2025.
- Visa-free entries: 1.269 million, or 50.9% of all inbound foreigners — up 47.5% year on year.
- Arrivals from APEC economies: 3.433 million (68.6%), up 23.6%.
- In the first quarter alone, foreigners crossed 2.02 million times (+31.3%); visa-free entries +58.1%.
For context, nationwide inbound foreigners rose 20.4% in the first half of 2026 — so Shenzhen's foreigner growth is running well above the national average.
What this means for you: easier, longer stays
The surge is not just volume — it is stay length. In the first half of 2026, foreigners entering on a 30-day stay permit topped 363,000, about 74.9% of inbound foreigners, up 28.1%. The old "land and leave" transit pattern is shrinking; medium-term stays are growing. Two practical takeaways:
Visa-free entry is now the default
Over half of foreign arrivals came in with no visa in hand. If your nationality is on China's visa-free list (50+ countries) or you qualify for the 240-hour transit waiver, arriving is simpler than it was even two years ago.
30-day stays are the norm
Three-quarters of inbound foreigners are on 30-day permits. For a relocation scouting trip, that is enough time to view apartments, open a bank account and register with the police — the core settling-in steps.
Families are arriving together
Under-14 arrivals rose 24% over the summer — a sign that the new arrivals are not just solo business travellers but households exploring a move.
Note: visa-free and 30-day entry rules still do not grant the right to work. See our China Visa-Free Entry guide for the work-boundary warning before you plan a move around a tourist entry.
Where foreigners actually land in Shenzhen
The 2026 numbers confirm what renters on the ground already know: Shenzhen's foreign community is concentrated in a few districts. If you want neighbours who already speak your language and international schools nearby, start here:
| Area | Who you'll find | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Shekou (Nanshan) | Japanese, Westerners, mixed expat families | Shenzhen's largest foreign enclave — Sea World waterfront, international schools (SIS, QSI, SWIS), ferry to HK airport |
| OCT / 华侨城 (Nanshan) | Large Korean community | Green "garden district", Korean restaurants and Korean tech firms; a long-standing Korean renter cluster |
| Futian CBD | Mixed nationalities, finance professionals | Central business district, Coco Park nightlife, best metro connections |
| Huaqiangbei (Futian) | Business visitors, electronics traders | The "tech Disneyland" — foreign buyers come for AI glasses, drones and robots; a hub, not a residential area |
Full rents, lease norms and apartment types for each district are in our Shenzhen rental guide. The clustering matters for housing: Korean renters historically favour compact 1–2 bedroom units; Japanese families lean to larger 3-bedrooms near schools; Westerners prefer spacious 4–5 bedroom homes in green compounds.
The arrival experience is getting smoother
Six major ports (Huanggang, Futian, Luohu and others) now run face-recognition express lanes — about one in three travellers clears by "swipe face", lifting overall efficiency 37.2%. Huanggang is a 24-hour port. At Shenzhen airport and Shekou Bay, one-stop foreigner service centres put 25 translation machines covering 153 languages on the floor, and the West Kowloon entry-card system cuts form-filling time by 60–80%.
For shoppers, 2026 brought duty-free stores at Shenzhen Bay and Liantang ports, a nationwide-first "one order, one package, one code" tax-refund mode, and 6 tax-refund ports with 2,500+ refund shops — the most of any Chinese city.
Practical takeaways for relocating in 2026
- Entry
- Come on a visa-free or 240-hour transit basis for a scouting trip; expect 30-day stays to be standard. Do not work on a tourist entry.
- District
- Shortlist Shekou or OCT first if you want an established foreign community and international schools; Futian for finance; Huaqiangbei only if you are in electronics trade.
- Ports
- Shenzhen Bay and Liantang have new duty-free + tax-refund; Huanggang runs 24 hours; Luohu and Futian are the busiest commuting links to Hong Kong.
- Language
- Translation machines (153 languages) sit in the airport and Shekou Bay service centres — but day-to-day life still rewards basic Mandarin, as on every China city page.
- Housing
- Rents and deposit norms are in the Shenzhen rental guide; the foreigner-friendly compounds are in Shekou and OCT.
